Hey Rabbit Fam,
We’re halfway through the year and the strangest thing I’ve read this year is about someone who made a “wind phone” for people to talk to their long-gone loved ones. I also have a book sitting on my desk called “The Cockroach” that was also a delightfully weird read.
Here are 5 things I’m into right now
Podcast | On Fire with Jeff Probst
Clara and I are big Survivor fans and I discovered this podcast a few months ago. Jeff Probst, host of Survivor, a fan and a player get together to break down each episode and, as someone who eventually wants to play Survivor, it’s SUPER fascinating to hear what goes into making the show. It’s become a part of my weekly Survivor experience. We’re in between Survivor seasons right now, waiting for 49 in the fall so I’ve been listening to past episodes.
Read | Battle of Blair Mountain, Smithsonian Magazine
During book research, I stumbled on this little tidbit of history that I’d never heard of before. The basic gist is that before unions, coal mining companies were HORRIBLE to their employees. The employees would move to company towns, lived in company-owned houses, be paid with “scrip” that was fake money only redeemable at the company store. If they’d go on strike for better wages, they’d get kicked out of the house. All of this ultimately led to what historians called the second-largest civilian battle outside of the Civil War.
Of course, this idea is in my hopper for a book. I have three that are percolating alongside this historical moment that, eventually, I want to combine together to make a historical fantasy that’s Red Rising + Temeraire.
Watch | Andor
Look, I’m sure this isn’t news for anyone, but I LOVED Andor season two. Episode 8 was a masterclass in building tension, and I’m so thankful that this art was made.
Watch | Kier Gaines talk about loving his kids, but not always loving being a parent
I’ve never heard anyone state this so eloquently and without cynicism before, and it totally hit home for me. I resonate with this deeply, and it was nice to hear someone say it and feel a bit of relief that I wasn’t a horrible human.
Listen | Wings by YOUR'S TRULY
As of this morning at 12 AM, “Wings”, my latest single1, is out now, and you can listen to it anywhere you listen to music.
It’s one of the first songs of of my next EP, The Inbetween. It’s also one of the first songs where I actively wrestle with my faith. The two verses compare God’s strong mercy to my chronically wobbly faith.
Verse 1
Have you seen his wings?
They fold over all his people.
Have you seen his hands?
They give always to his children.
Verse 2
Have you seen my faith?
It moves like troubled water under the steeple?
With his stores of grace
I push and pull towards the kingdom
I’d love it if you took some time to listen to it and truly tell me how it hits you. It’s an artist’s dream to have people not just listen, but resonate, experience, heck, at this point, if you can thoughtfully layout why it wasn’t your cup of tea and why it wasn’t what the world needed, I’d love to hear it.
Stay curious!
Dave
**PSA, if you go to Spotify and see that Wings is from 2016, and go “why is that from 10 years ago, read this story about what I’m doing and where all this music is coming from. These songs are old, but they are new to you because I’m only just now releasing them.
